Tanghalang Ateneo to stage ‘Ningning sa Silangan’ starting March 27

Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theatre company in the Loyola Schools, is honored to present Ningning sa Silangan as the final production of its 46th season, “Eloquentia, Sapienta, Humanitas: The Ricky Season.”

The story of Ningning Sa Silangan begins before the beginning: before towns, farms, or even bodies of water. This is a creation story. It is also a story of death and rebirth.

Five narrators emerge to help us remember it, each taking on various roles in a small village: Inang Kalikasan, a landless farmer, a housekeeper, a lawyer, an aging herald, and two brothers who have different ideas of what it means to bring light to their home. While one brother seeks to revive the paternalistic legacy of their landlord father, and the other brother dreams of embracing American industrialization, Inang Kalikasan fights to tell a different story.

Ningning sa Silangan, a Filipino translation of Jo Clifford’s A Light the Village, is a parable of hope amidst poverty and greed in a small village.

It will serve as the undergraduate acting thesis production of John Patrick Noynay, Louis Paguia, and Lyle Viray, under the advisement of Missy Maramara MFA PhD.

It is also part of Tanghalang Ateneo’s season-long tribute to Dr. Ricardo “Ricky” Abad, whose sociological approach to theatre-making championed the values of Eloquentia, Sapientia, and Humanitas in every story we tell. After directing Ningning sa Silangan in 1999,  Dr. Ricky famously performed an excerpt while delivering his acceptance speech for the Ateneo School of Humanities Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. Both this performance and his directorial work are referred to, by his students and colleagues alike, as a manifesto for a life in service of the arts.

In our commitment to build on his legacy of theater in pursuit of social change, through a chorus of voices, this tale interrogates the dynamics of social change, gender constructs, and the forms of resistance.   The overarching themes of combating patriarchal and capitalist ideologies challenges the dominant narratives exploiting people and the environment. This confronts the audience to reflect on the reality of these ideologies and the world we desire to create.  As the story reimagines power structures, it reflects the theme of the season, reminding us of our role in shaping the world through the pursuit of wisdom, eloquence, and humanism.
