FilDocs and the Cultural Center of the Philippines are working together to launch DaangDokyu.ph - a dedicated virtual home on the web for Philippine documentaries.
A growing public database with detailed search functions, aided by tags and metadata, DaangDokyu.ph puts over a century's worth of Philippine documentaries within quick reach. It aims to elevate the appreciation of documentaries by making them more accessible for viewers to find.
Each film will have its own page containing its creative and technical information, as well as promotional materials and downloads. Films already streaming on other platforms can feature their streaming links on their page, like free ad space. One of the unique features is a submission tool, through which filmmakers can add their films to the database.
New documentary offerings updated regularly at the website
One of the website's goals is to bring attention to the country's past through a slew of documentaries that explore stories of the follies of tyranny and the fight of the disenfranchised. “Documentaries can shed light on present issues and contemporary social conditions,” filmmaker and Project Director DaangDokyu.ph, Jewel Maranan, said, “But an underappreciated power of the documentary is its capacity to offer a way of approaching social memory.”
DaangDokyu.ph was born out of Maranan's initiative to map the Philippine documentary landscape.
After collecting almost 1,500 titles, the next stage in this laborious process of looking back is establishing the online database. Moving forward, the platform aims for viewers to look back and learn collectively by making the database open for viewers to explore and producers to expand.
The platform not only provides access to a variety of information about Filipino documentaries but also co-hosts special programs with other organizations working to combat misinformation.
Until April 9, the online festival Dokyu Power (The Power of Documentary) will be streaming some of the most powerful documentaries from around the world to encourage meaningful and informed political discourse on the power of people’s unity and social action.
