Gear up for the 18th Spring Film Festival

The 18th Spring Film Festival is coming this January 23-30. 

As the first month of the new year ends, the Spring Film Festival makes a comeback for the 18th time! The film festival brings the magic of Chinese cinema to the Philippines with a rich lineup of spectacular movies.

This year, the Shangri-La Plaza partnered with the Ateneo Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies, Ateneo Celadon, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines. Ranging from gripping action thrillers to eye-catching animations and wuxia, the 18th Spring Film Festival offers a variety of movies, and there’s bound to be a cinematic gem for everyone interested!

THE CAPTAIN by Andrew Lau
Outstanding Film Award Winner – Huabiao Film Awards 2020
Based on the real-life Sichuan Airlines Flight 8633 incident where a windshield shuttered abruptly after take-off.

LOOKING UP by Deng Chao
Best Picture Award Nominee – Macau International Movie Festival 2019
Narrates the poignant tale of an astronaut who, stranded in space, draws strength from his enduring connection with his father.

WHITE SNAKE by Amp Wong
Best Animated Feature Award Nominee – Golden Rooster Awards 2019
Based on a popular Chinese folk tale, it tells the story of a white snake yearning for the human experience.

LEGEND OF THE DEMON CAT by Chen Kaige
Best Cinematography Award Winner – Golden Rooster Awards 2019
It follows poet Bai Letain and monk Kukai as they investigate the death of the emperor’s concubine.

FULL RIVER RED by Zhang Yimou
Best Screenplay Award Winner – Shanghai International Film Festival 2023
The story follows a murder mystery set in the beginning era of the Southern Song dynasty.

THE BRAVEST by Tony Chan
Outstanding Film Award Winner – Huabiao Film Awards 2020
The film showcases the story of several Chinese firefighters as they struggle to contain a huge fire after an oil pipeline explodes—based no less on the real-life Xingang Port oil spill incident that captivated Chinese headlines.

Where can I watch the films?
Like last year, the Spring Film Festival will screen its films exclusively at the Red Carpet Cinema at Shangri-La Plaza.

How much does a ticket cost?
Zilch. All screenings are free!
Are there other events?
Yes! Aside from the Film Viewing on January 23-30, there will also be a Chinese Photo Exhibit on the same dates and a Painting Workshop to be held on January 27, 2:00 pm.
