Sine Bulacan XIII broadens lens of Bulakenyos

On its thirteenth and rebranded edition (or fourteenth, counting a special iteration during the pandemic), Sine Bulacan, the longest-running student-led film festival in Bulacan, brought emphasis to local and homegrown stories under the theme ‘Sa Lente ng Kwentong Bulakenyo.’

Festival director Christine Guardiano, a journalism senior at Bulacan State University, said that audiences, and even the organizers, found themselves resonating with this year’s lineup.

“There’s this notion of relatability during the film screenings because we can see the experiences of being a Bulakenyo,” Guardiano said in an interview.

Workshops made a comeback this year, which Guardiano called a “refreshing” change of pace from the usual format of just film viewing. Filmmakers Mina Cruz and Ryan Machado gave scriptwriting and directing workshops while film scholar Nick Deocampo joined in during one of the talkback sessions.

In the future, Guardiano hopes the festival can invest in more workshops and attract more students as well as Bulakenyo filmmakers to “broaden the lens” of Bulakenyos.
